Oksana forgot where she was at first, waking up at the foot of a hill and lying in tall moist grass god knew where. It also didn't help that everything was so goddamn pitch black too. Not able to grasp any solid awareness, she let her eyes look up into the murky darkness of the clouds looming overhead...strange, it looked as if there was a red light shining behind the cloud cover. She laid there uncomfortably, trying to get ahold of her bearings as well as to recount her steps in the last 24 hours.
Well lets see...got up around 12pm and ate...called Dad....hopped on a bus around 4pm...went out to the boonies of japan...OH.
Oksana shot upright...and immediately regretted it. A few Russian curses slipped out of her lips as she nursed her head. As her senses graced herself with their presence again, she felt a small wound on her left temple which had drying, sticky blood streaking down to her chin. No other injuries hindered her, excepting the small bruises she felt on her arms and left side where she figured she fell.
Oksana knew what earthquakes felt like, especially living on the west coast of the United States, and that's what she suspected had jolted her from her position on the hill. After all, with the accompanied sirens that had blared right before she took her tumble, she could only assume so. That and as the stories go about Hanuda, there was a bad earthquake that caused a landslide back in the early 70s.
So put two and two together and you got a solid answer.
Oksana glared into the darkness, thinking that if this got back to Yusuke and Jacob, she was would never gonna hear the end of it. It had to be a coincidence, after all if this had happened before, surely they must get tremors every now and then. The earthquake hadn't been anything colossal but it sure did knock her off her feet.
After gripping about the dumb situation she had put herself in due to pride and practicality, Oksana steadily got back on her feet and brush a few dirt particles off herself. She lead herself back down a couple steps to the bus stop that was still next to the Route 333 road. The signed appeared jarred but remained standing, signaling pedestrians of where the bus would make its arrivals and departures.
To her right was the small security building the size of a booth where local police officers stopped at during their routine patrols. A dim red light hung from the front entrance, weakly illuminating the sliding doors. Everything looked as the way she had seen since her arrival off the city bus excepting of a police cruiser oddly parked near the hut. Also the entrance doors had been slid aside. When had that happened? Admittedly she didn't know how much time had passed since she was knocked out and wondered if an officer had come by to check on the locals. She did notice a house that was located on top of the hill and it was definitely a possibility the officer hadn't seen her lying in the tall grass. Maybe if he was around she could ask him if he had a medical kit or something...that is if he knew any English...
Weighing her options, Oksana decided to at least look around and see if any cops were nearby, and if not she could at least go back to the bus stop and wait until the morning to go back to the dorms.
She walked out on the flat black pavement towards the security hut. It was still warm out, being a muggy summer in Japan. Wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her knuckle, she stepped over to the entrance of the hut.
"Hello? Er-Konbanwa?"
No light was on in the inside, and only silence greeted her. She leaned into the opening taking in a dry-erase board and old yellowing posters scattered about the walls.
She exhaled in disappointment. Reaching into her right boot she took out a carton of Regals and a lighter and flipped the tab back to reveal 2 fresh cigarettes. She lit one up and stuffed the box and the zippo back in her boot and took a puff.
"Plan B it is." She looked to rocky trail and started hiking up the hill.
